Over twenty vineyards in South Africa presented their selection of Chardonnay (and only Chardonnay). It was a day filled with spectacular wines and of course, good food, courtesy of us!
We caught up with Nikki Friedman of Môreson to find out what inspired this idea (other than of course a couple of delicious glasses of Môreson Chardonnay…)
Nikki, why Chardonnay?
Because we don’t do Chenin… I’m only sort of kidding [laughs]
The reason it’s all about Chardonnay is because it’s by far our favourite varietal. There is no other white varietal that is as versatile as Chardonnay – or at least no other white varietal that rises to the top in every blend. Still wine, unwooded/wooded – check. Sparkling wine/MCC – check. Dessert wine – check. It is, in our humble opinion, the noblest of noble cultivars.
In addition to this South Africa has an abundance of superb Chardonnay producers. The depth in our industry, on a Chardonnay front is staggering. It is surely the one area where we more than measure up to the rest of the world.
Chardonnay is making a huge comeback. The ABCs of the 80s have been replaced by OMG it’s Chardonnay. Or ChardonnYay.
Well played Nikki.
