Heavy cream (the fresher the better) Mason jar with tight-fitting lid Salt
Pour the cream into the jar, leaving at least half the space for air. Clamp the lid on and shake it vigorously as if you were making a cocktail. Watch as the cream whips, getting thicker and thicker until it breaks. The liquid that forms is buttermilk, and the solid is butter. This should take about 15 minutes.
